Dolphin-Assisted Therapy in VR – VR Scout

UnderwaterVRA Dutch non-profit is strapping waterproof VR headsets on people in pools so they can “swim with dolphins.” The Dolphin Swim Club has been offering the experience, named Dolphin VR, as “dolphin-assisted therapy” since last month. While submerged, you can watch video reels of bottlenose dolphins swimming in their natural habitat. VR specialists Viemr had divers capable of holding their breath for up to 5-minutes record the footage during a 10-day shoot at the Red Sea in December 2015.

However, so-called “dolphin therapy” is not readily available to everyone. For one thing, it can be prohibitively expensive, while the idea of people leaping into pools with captive animals has also been criticized as cruel by environmentalists. A Dutch nonprofit thinks it has the answer, though — and it involves Virtual Reality.

But a Dutch non-profit believes it has found a way to bring people, especially the disabled, closer to such a joyful experience through the technological, immersive advances offered by virtual reality (VR).”

Snorkeling with wild dolphinsThe Dutch newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad wrote a one-page report on the effectiveness of Virtual Reality on chronic pain treatment and as a relaxation method. The Dolphin Swim Club was mentioned as well. ‘The human brain can easily be fooled‘, says Marijke (founder of the Dolphin Swim Club). ‘Our brain can hardly distinguish a virtual experience from a real one’. Patients no longer have to fly all the way to Curaçao for so-called dolphin therapy, you can take a plunge and swim with the dolphins before going to bed.

We spent a wonderful day with the EenVandaag crew and the team of handicapped expertise centre ‘s Heeren Loo. EenVandaag is a Dutch current affairs program covering the latest news and background stories from the Netherlands and abroad. ‘s Heerenloo is researching the effect of VR therapy. In 82% of the cases the symptoms improved.

We spent most of our time in the pool in Apeldoorn, where Dion tested our new Wild Dolphin UnderwaterVR. We were all touched by his reaction, and joyful personality.

What a surprise! We discovered that our wild dolphin friends have found their way to meet Sarah. By chance, we came across her beautiful story on the internet. We are all touched by her encounter.

Flix Films, a company based in the UK, met Sarah through the MNDassociation. Sarah has a type of MND causing minimal body movement. She communicates via Tobii Eye Gaze technology and has used her condition to inspire and pioneer technology benefitting others with limited movement. Sarah was asked if there were any experiences she wished she’d had. Her reply? ‘I’ve always wanted to swim with dolphins’.

Virtual Reality therapy with wild dolphinsOver 150 hospitals  and healthcare institutions worldwide provide the Dolphin Swim Club’s Wild Dolphin VR therapy. This Dutch / Swedish initiative proves to be successful for adults and children suffering from mental disabilities or autism. Starting this week, 10 Dutch hospitals will use so-called dolphin therapy. But the Dutch initiative is popular in the United States as well. In the Stanford medical centre, children undergoing heart surgery swim with dolphins before the procedure. And the wild dolphin VR has proved popular with patients suffering from chronic pain at the Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.

UnderwaterVR in a tankVR-Nerds mentioned the Dolphin Swim Club as the highlight of the VR Days 2017 in Amsterdam. We installed a converted container in the hall of the exhibition, which served as a swim tank.
